There are few things as nerve-wracking as being in a collision. When it happens, your mind can go blank and time can seem to slow. After the initial shock, you are usually very alert as your body is filled with adrenalin. You can be confused and disoriented and the first thing you want to do is step out of your car. But that is not the best idea. First you should take a few deep breathes and assess the situation.

Are you on a road with a lot of traffic? Is everyone okay? Are you in any immediate danger? These are the questions you should be asking yourself. If it seems safe to step out of the car, then make sure to bring your cell phone to take pictures of the damage and a place to write down details and the information you will need for your insurance company.
